HAYATI

First Draft Series

Over the course of a dinner, three generations of the Wahid family sit for their weekly reunion at an Arabic restaurant. While the night starts casually, it progresses into something out of the ordinary. Nothing can be swept under the rug and kept there forever. It is left to each family member to decide how to get through the night, while grasping to preserve what is left of their rocky relationships.

In May 2020, after the recent death of their Igbo matriarch, four siblings gather to clear her home in two days. As they grieve, reminisce, and fall into old rhythms within the house, memory and myth blur, long-buried tensions surface, and the light she left on forces them to see each other clearly for the first time.​
